Our lives are defined by our choices. The decisions we make carry more control than the circumstances that we create. Most often than not, we underestimate all that we can accomplish because we tend to place massive amounts of limitations on ourselves mentally. However, if there is one thing that I have learned while making my own decision to own my own life by building my own business, it is that we all have the power to achieve whatever it is that defines our passion and purpose.

I have been inspired by so many people throughout my journey building my brand and business and below are 5 women who have defined themselves by what they have built, lessons they have learned and simply defied the odds by building their business.

Tory Burch, Founder & CEO, Tory Burch

Believe or not, Tory Burch started her billion dollar business from her kitchen table. That’s right her kitchen table! Even though society labeled her success as “overnight”, Tory begs to differ. She and her team put in over 20,000 plus hours before she opened her store. She states in a recent interview: “If you didn’t count the 20,000 hours we put into building the business up to that day, or the combined half-a-million hours we all spent learning the industry in the years before that.”

LESSON: Overnight success takes time. Time that will yield the results that you are seeking but no matter what, if you want to be successful it will take 10,000 plus hours and a massive amount of time studying your craft/industry.

Julia Hartz Co-Founder & President of Eventbrite

Julia Hartz is one of the most influential and successful woman in the tech arena. To make sure her company stood out amongst the other event platforms that have been created, Julia didn’t focus on her company but rather their competition. This allowed her to see where her competitors made their mistakes and from there she and team focused on making their company better than the rest. In the end, it worked. Today, Eventbrite is valued at $1 billion dollars.

LESSON: Trump what the competition overlooks.

The Olsen Twins Founders of Dualstar & The Row

For millions of Americans we know the Olsen twins for their role in Full House but they have grown beyond their role on the television screen and have made their mark as some of the youngest billions in the world. What most don’t know is that they started their company Dualstar at the young age of 6. Yes, 6! So, it is no surprise that decades later they billionaires. Their motto is simple: “Don’t be afraid to take risks, well-informed risks”.

LESSON: Take calculated risks and know your craft. It is just as important for you to never stop learning because building any business takes decades and that means you must continue to grow.

Jessica Alba. Co-Founder & President of The Honest Company

From the big screen to business meetings, Jessica Alba is most known for her role in several movies but she is definitely a business woman. Starring in the new show Planet of The AppsJessica has made her mark in the world of business. Jessica admits that: “It’s never going to 100% right immediately.” Over the last 18 months Jessica refined her idea (with her team) which in the beginning had too much going on to where The Honest Company is today, a billion dollar enterprise.

LESSON: Refine your idea and surround yourself with people within your organization that are smarter than you.

Jessica Simpson, Founder of The Jessica Simpson Collection

From the sound stage to the board room, Jessica Simpson’s collection ranges from perfume, to shoes, to apparel. Jessica Simpson’s collection generates over $1 billion dollar in sales and counting. She went from MTV’s marriage reality show to leading a billion dollar entity. Her secret, her positive perspective on failure and understanding that building a business is a process of and a learning curve.

LESSON: Failing is often the key to success.

    That’s it!

My life is crazy busy, and I literally wouldn’t have it any other way.  My family life can be perfectly described as beautiful chaos.  Why do I call it “beautiful chaos”?  Because my kids are the most amazing kids on this planet and we’re not perfect by any means, but we sure do have a lot of fun together.  I do have to admit that it is exhausting sometimes trying to juggle their’ hectic schedules along with my business and part time practice as a Nurse Practitioner and I am so fortunate to have such a wonderful life partner and teammate in my husband John.  I don’t know how I would be able to do it all without him.  Whenever I’ve needed to attend to an aspect of my life that either takes my focus or physical presence away from our family, he’s always there for me, and for our family.  I am a very lucky girl.

So how do I balance Entrepreneurship & Family?  It’s simple: my family comes first.  I am a planner and I plan ahead.   I like to know what my Days, Weeks, and Months are going to look like.  I make sure that my kids activities and family activities are written down on our Calendar first, and everything else is added in after that.

So almost 2 months ago, I made a massive shift at the age of 35.  It wasn’t easy, and my decision was made with careful thought and consideration.  In the end, I did what I felt was the best for the wellbeing of my family (myself included).  A real “tipping point” in my decision was change.  Change is necessary, and change is an inevitable part of Life.  If you don’t change, you will never grow, and you will always stay the same.  Staying the same isn’t acceptable to me.  It was time for a change.  It was also time to tackle a goal of mine that I’ve had for the past 5 years, which is to lose the rest of my “baby weight” from when I was pregnant with my son, feel better, and really get healthy from the inside out.  Before, if I said I was dieting, I wasn’t really working out, so it was time to get it right.

So what have I done exactly?  First, I have gone in a different direction with my Entrepreneurial pursuits in Network Marketing and partnered with a Company called Modere.  What is Modere?  Modere is a lifestyle brand of products that embodies the campaign of “Live Clean”.  What is “Live Clean”?  Exactly as it sounds.  Modere’s products are completely safe, 100% chemical free products of which include skincare, laundry soap, body soap, hair products, men’s personal care products, toothpaste, mouthwash, health & wellness supplements, nutritional products, etc.

Who doesn’t want to be healthy?!  I wasn’t unhealthy by any means but I know I was tired of waking up in the Morning and feeling sluggish and like I was running out of energy when it came to keeping up with my kids.  My family is the most important thing in this world to me and more than knowing that my kids deserved a healthy and energetic Mom who felt good and could keep up with them, I knew I deserved to be a healthy Mom, Wife, Nurse Practitioner, and Entrepreneur for myself.

Once again, it’s been a little over 4 weeks, and I feel sooo good.  I work out 5 times a week regularly, I have incorporated Protein Shakes into my life 2-3 days a week, I have been using Modere’s Burn, Carb Blocker, and Fiber Supplement products, Modere’s Liquid Biocell, and have been following the Mediterranean Diet.

Have I lost weight?  I have, but for me it isn’t about that. I wanted to feel good, and I do.  I feel good.  I wish I had made these changes 5 years ago.

There are so many different systems out there and if you’re looking to feel better and get into better shape, then I highly encourage you to do your homework.  Ask around.  See what works for other people.  That’s what I did!
